At BASI, we regard Pilates Mat work as the crown jewel of the Pilates method — a pure and powerful expression of its core principles. Accessible, versatile, and deeply transformative, Mat work offers an ideal entry point into the world of Pilates and a meaningful way to share its benefits across a wide range of settings — from studios and gyms to homes and wellness retreats.
Our Mat Teacher Training Program is thoughtfully designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for aspiring instructors. The curriculum blends engaging lectures, guided discussions, practical movement sessions, and in-depth exercise analysis to create a well-rounded and immersive learning experience. Whether you're beginning your teaching journey or preparing to continue into our Comprehensive Program, the Mat course sets the tone for a strong, confident start.
Beyond technique, the program deepens your understanding of the Pilates philosophy and its real-world applications. You’ll gain the knowledge, skill, and presence to lead with purpose and inspire through movement.
To receive a BASI Mat Teacher Certificate, students must complete a total of 85 student hours — including 15 hours of observation, 30 hours of teaching practice, and 40 hours of practical training. Certification also requires one online multiple-choice exam and a final evaluation. This includes a teaching assessment, where you’ll guide a peer through four Mat exercises, and a practical exam demonstrating your own proficiency in four selected movements.
When you complete BASI’s Mat Pilates Teacher Training, you’ll have graduated from one of the most rigorous, enriching, and positively life-changing programs in the field — fully prepared to take the next step and share Pilates with confidence and integrity.
